This is one of Hiroshima University's Peace Studies courses. By showing films that portray the history of the Battle of Okinawa and the postwar period of U.S. military occupation, the course encourages the students to reflect on peace, which is one of the central objectives of our Peace Studies curriculum.
Expected Outcome1. To be able to think about peace from multiple perspectives and express their own opinions.
2. To understand and be able to explain various factors that prevent peace and the complex aspects involved, including conflicts between ideology and reality.
Class Objectives
/Class Outline
With more than 80 years having passed since the end of the war, the ways societies remember and represent wartime history are shifting from the survivors' firsthand testimonies to how subsequent generations, with no direct experience, pass on, reinterpret, and continually reshape those memories. At this critical juncture, the central concern is how past events are imbued with meaning and connected to present-day realities. Failing to recognize these dynamics of interpretation makes it difficult to detect selective amnesia in historical accounts or their mobilization for current political ends. This course examines depictions of the Battle of Okinawa and the postwar U.S. military occupation across a diverse array of films from different countries and eras, providing an overview of how memories tied to Okinawa have been reshaped over time. Through analysis of the evolution of these memories, the course seeks to illuminate the pivotal role that the cinematic medium has played in reinterpreting and reconstructing memory to align with the concerns, values, and contexts of each era.
