Expected Outcome 1. To be able to think about peace from multiple perspectives and express their own opinions.
2. To understand and be able to explain various factors that prevent peace and the complex aspects involved, including conflicts between ideology and reality.

Class Objectives
/Class Outline Weapons of mass destruction used in war such as nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, so called NBC weapons, could cause many fatalities and injuries among innocent civilians and what is more they could suffer from long lasting health hazard. In our time, there could actually be possibility that the downsized NBC weapons are used by terrorist act.  This lecture will outline big picture of health hazard caused by mass destruction weapons on scientific ground, taking up actual cases of human damage suffered from Hiroshima Atomic bomb, and shed light on the outrange against humanity of these weapons use from viewpoint of medicine.  Moreover, peacekeeping activities by the organization, HICARE (Hiroshima International Council for Health Care of the Radiation-Exposed), is operating mainly in Hiroshima.  This lecture will introduce their works and indicate the purpose and meaning of peacekeeping activities.  This lecture’s objective is to deepen your consideration about purpose and meaning of peace which is pursued by Hiroshima survivors through 15 distinctive classes with the above contents.

You can take distinctive classes by distinctive lecturers.  And this lecture is designed for you to accomplish its above class objectives by a whole of 15 classes. It is recommended to visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum because health issues in atomic bomb survivors will be addressed in this lecture frequently.

Review In general, literatures about health damage caused by mass destruction weapons such as Atomic bomb are limited, so we have only fragmented information.  In this lecture, you can be provided the valuable information by an explanation and illustration which is based on scientific evidence.  First and foremost, it is recommended that you attend classes and study in the classes, then read text/reference books by yourself and deepen your knowledge furthermore.

Requirements

Grading Method Reports and class participation will be evaluated comprehensively. Grading will be based on 50% on the report on thinking about peace and 50% on the level of participation in the class. Submission of a report on thinking about peace will be a prerequisite for the grade evaluation.

Practical Experience Experienced

Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it Faculty members who are doctors and have practical experience in health care for A-bomb survivors will give lectures on their areas of expertise (Drs. Nanao Kamada and Yoshitaka Ueno).

Message You are expected to understand the health damage caused by mass destruction weapons such as Atomic bomb on scientific grounds, and then, understand that these weapons use is inhumane act, and deepen your consideration about the meaning of peace as a student who studies in Hiroshima.

Other You are required to submit a report entitled "My Approach to Peace" as a common assignment for Peace Science Courses. When you fail to submit the report, the credits will not be awarded.

The 3rd term course--> from October 28th to November 7th
