Class Objectives
/Class Outline
This course is taught by two instructors, each addressing the anthropology of migration and the anthropology of development and politics. Focusing in particular on phenomena such as welfare, social policy, and development, the course examines what kinds of power relations operate in these domains and, at the same time, what forms of self, subjectivity, and agency emerge within them. By paying attention to these dimensions, the course seeks to illuminate the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in the contemporary world.

As concrete actors involved in development, welfare, and social policy, particular attention will be given to communities and intimate sphere, the state, the economy, and citizens and civil society. Drawing on ethnographic cases from various parts of the world, the course will consider these pressing contemporary issues.
