Class Objectives /Class Outline |
The “Second Seven-Fascicle Version” of the Hōbutsushū , while classified as a collection of didactic tales, incorporates a large number of waka poems—many of them arranged in groups of five—and thus presents an aspect that could almost be described as that of a poetry anthology. Although most of these poems are drawn from other sources, the poetic ideas they originally embodied appear to undergo a striking transformation into entirely different images when incorporated into the textual framework of the Hōbutsushū.
Through investigating the sources of these poems, collecting relevant materials, and interpreting the waka, I would like to explore what the Hōbutsushū is, and, by extension, what waka itself is.
Presenters will be asked to select freely one group of five poems and give a presentation over the course of one or two sessions. Depending on the number of participants, we will also incorporate close readings of scholarly articles during the term. |
