Class Objectives /Class Outline |
The aim of this course is to acquire the skills necessary to understand and analyze regions, including the use of maps and statistics, and to identify regional issues. After explaining the relevant theories in lectures, students will engage in practical work. The Seto Inland Sea will be used as a case study. |

There will be individual assignments and a group report. The class will focus on group work among students. The lecture content will concentrate on explaining geography and the regional structure of the Seto Inland Sea. The order and content may be adjusted depending on class size and other factors. Group formation will be arranged based on a student questionnaire. |

Suggestions on Preparation and Review |
Preparation and review: Before each class, review the handouts from the previous session.
Student work: From Lecture 5 to Lecture 15, students will prepare for their presentation and report. Each group will set a theme and develop a research plan. Each group will conduct its own research (partly outside class hours). The results will be presented in the final class and submitted as a written report. Within each group, members will assign roles and carry out preliminary research and content organization before each class. In addition, there will be in-class assignments to submit. |

| Grading Method |
In-class assignments: 80% Except for the final week, there will be an assignment or homework each week: 8 sessions × 10 points. Assignments submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
Group presentation and report: 20% If academic misconduct is detected in reports or assignments (such as the use of unclear sources or copying and pasting from websites or other materials), the final grade will be D. |

This course uses the Seto Inland Sea region as a case study to learn methods for regional analysis. It will provide an opportunity to better understand the region where you will spend the next four years. |

The language of instruction (Japanese, English, or a combination of both) will be determined in consideration of the students’ language backgrounds and announced in the first class. All teaching materials and assignments will be provided in both Japanese and English. |
