Class Objectives
/Class Outline
This course aims to provide a systematic understanding of the structure and fundamental concepts of Family Law (Relatives Law) as part of the Civil Code. Through the examination of judicial precedents and academic theories, students will develop the ability to understand concrete legal issues from a doctrinal perspective.
In addition, based on an awareness of contemporary social conditions and the various challenges surrounding families, students will cultivate the ability to examine modern issues concerning family from both theoretical and practical perspectives, including beyond the traditional framework of Family Law. 
Class Schedule 1. Orientation, What is Family Law?
2. Principles of family procedure and the Family Court (learning through divorce procedures)
3. The concept of marriage, formation of marriage, impediments to marriage
4. Legal effects of marriage, matrimonial property regimes, purposes and grounds for divorce
5. Divorce claims by the spouse at fault, legal effects of divorce
6. Family names and the family registry (koseki), de facto marriage, legal protection of same-sex couples
7. Establishment of biological parent–child relationships, presumption of legitimacy, acknowledgment (recognition)
8. Parental authority and parental responsibility, limitations on parental authority, child abuse and child protection
9. Overview of alternative child care, adoption system, guardianship of minors
10. Adult guardianship and support obligations, care and responsibility for the elderly
11. Domestic violence (child abuse, intimate partner violence, elder abuse)
12. Sexual orientation and gender identity and the right to form a family, assisted reproductive technologies and parent–child law
13. Children’s rights and the future of Family Law, divorce, remarriage, and children
14. Gender-based inequality and the role of Family Law

Students are expected to carefully read the materials covered in class as well as the relevant sections of the textbook. After each class, students should submit a comprehension questionnaire and further their understanding by reviewing related materials. 
Requirements Students must bring the designated textbook, a statutory code (Civil Code table of contents included), and a notebook to class. 
Grading Method Grades will be based on the final examination.
Students who are unable to take the final examination must complete the required university procedures in order to sit for a supplementary examination.
