Class Objectives
/Class Outline
This course explores how media shape understandings of conflict, violence, reconciliation, and peacebuilding. Drawing on peace education theory and critical media studies, students examine news media, digital platforms, visual culture, propaganda, and memorial institutions. The course emphasizes analytical skills and practical application, encouraging students to critically evaluate media narratives and design media-based peace education initiatives.
Situating media as both a site of power and a pedagogical tool, the course examines how narratives of war and peace are constructed, circulated, contested, and institutionalized. Special attention is given to the role of museums and memorial institutions in shaping collective memory and promoting (or constraining) reconciliation. Through critical analysis and project-based learning, students will connect theoretical frameworks with real-world media practices.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Explain core concepts in peace education (e.g., positive/negative peace, structural and cultural violence).
2. Apply critical media literacy frameworks to analyze representations of conflict.
3. Evaluate the role of digital media in shaping polarization and peace discourse.
4. Critically assess the educational and narrative functions of museums.
5. Design a media-based peace education initiative grounded in theory.
