/Class Outline
This course begins with an introduction to the concept of multicultural society, followed by an exploration of the organization of the class. Early sessions will focus on public education systems in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Bhutan, offering a comparative perspective on educational frameworks across diverse regions.
The course then shifts to an observation and analysis of the educational experiences of foreign technical interns in Japan, particularly in the context of globalization and its impact on the economy and labour shortage in Japan, with specific attention to the unique challenges faced by the country, specifically focusing on Higashi-Hiroshima. A key component of the course includes a site visit to TECS, where students will gain firsthand insight into the support structures for foreign interns in Japan. This visit will allow students to observe the practical application of educational and organizational strategies in multicultural settings. This visit to TECS will be followed by reflection.

Theoretical discussions will be deeply integrated into the course, enabling students to critically examine how cultural identity, language diversity, and globalization shape educational experiences. Students will start by exploring major multicultural theories and examining case studies of multicultural policies in various countries. The course will focus on how cultural identity influences learning outcomes and academic performance, considering the fluidity of cultural identity in educational contexts. Students will analyze the role of language in shaping educational access and success, particularly in multicultural societies. They will also learn about effects of multicultural education that lead to cultural diversity, promoting inclusivity and equity. Through these discussions, students will gain a basic understanding of multicultural education in various societies.
