Class Objectives

To develop the ability to read and conduct advanced analysis of classical literature, we will engage in a close reading of The Tale of Genji.

The Tale of Genji was read by many people soon after its completion, and from the late Heian period onward it gave rise to numerous commentaries. When we think of premodern commentaries, we may imagine them as outdated or fantastical interpretations; however, they are traces of the diverse ways in which various people have read and interpreted The Tale of Genji, and many of them form the foundation of current interpretations. Even interpretations that have not been carried down to the present reflect, in some way, the values of the time in which those commentaries were produced.

In this course, while appreciating the world of The Tale of Genji, we will also reflect on the thoughts of the people who have continued to read it across the centuries, aiming to grasp its world from multiple perspectives.

The primary text will be the Shinpen Nihon Koten Bungaku Zenshū (New Edition of the Complete Japanese Classical Literature Series). Since purchasing it may be difficult at present, resources such as Japanknowledge are recommended. The following commentaries will be used for reference:

Review
In the first half of the course, guidance will be provided on how to prepare presentation materials, but students are encouraged to consult the course instructors freely.

For each class, students are expected to prepare by studying their assigned sections in advance, considering any questions or interpretations they may have. Based on this preparation, active participation and contributions during class discussions are required. 
Requirements  
Grading Method Evaluation will be based on the quality and completeness of presentation materials, the appropriateness of responses during discussions, and participation in questions and answers as a class. Depending on the number of students enrolled, a final paper may be required.
