Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Students will understand the s of mathematics education and cultivate basic capabilities needed to be a mathematics teacher, by discussing the methodology of teaching such as instructions & learning theories, problem solving, and conceptual configurations of mathematics and by analyzing mathematics lessons.
Class Schedule Lesson1: Course Overview and Objectives
Students will understand the characteristics and uniqueness of mathematics education activities and consider the significance of studying and researching mathematics education.
Lesson2: The conceptions of mathematics
Students will gain an overview of the history of mathematics and consider the relationship between people and mathematics from a historical perspective. In particular, they learn about the debate over the foundations of mathematics, and use this knowledge to help shape your own view of mathematics.
Lesson3: Epistemology of Mathematics Education
Students will learn about several epistemological positions on mathematics education and how learning mathematics can be perceived in a variety of ways. Through this, they discuss possibilities of human growth through learning mathematics.
Lesson4: Purpose and goals of mathematics teaching
Students will learn perspectives for grasping goals in mathematics education based on the characteristics of mathematics. Also, they analyze surveys of academic ability and learning status to understand school students' current situations. By recognizing these discrepancies, they will conceive their own goals.
Lesson5: Purpose and Goals of Mathematics Education(2)
Students will learn about the lineage of goals in mathematics teaching in Japan and how they have continued to the present day. Also, they get an overview of the goals of mathematics education overseas. Through these activities, students aim to be able to set and discuss their own goals for mathematics teaching.
Lesson6: Mathematics teaching material and its study
Students will learn the basic concepts of teaching materials study and conduct your own study using teaching contents from elementary school mathematics, junior high school mathematics, and high school mathematics.
Lesson7: Mathematics teaching material and its study
They will learn teaching materials study about task-based learning,  the learning that transcends school types and subjects, and the learning from the perspective of its connection to people's lives. They discuss the significance of teaching materials study in connection with research on the teacher's mathematical knowledge for teaching should possess.
[Report 1] Based on the goals and content of mathematics, and the background knowledge and thinking behind designing mathematics lessons, propose their own ideal form of mathematics classes using examples of teaching materials from junior high and high schools.
Lesson8: Principles supporting mathematics teaching and learning.
I will provide an overview of research on understanding, problem solving, mathematical modeling, and other fundamental theories in mathematics education, raising awareness of mathematics education research.
Lesson9: Principles supporting mathematics teaching and learning.
I will provide the overviews of research on semiotics, communication, reasoning and proving, raising awareness of mathematics education research.
Lesson10: Theories of mathematics teaching
I will provide the overviews of research on the aspects of mathematics lesson, the problem-solving approaches, open(-ended) approaches, cognition and affect, and discuss a variety of approaches to constructing mathematics lessons.
Lesson11: Theories of mathematics teaching
I will provide the overviews of the research on mathematical situation, teaching aids, constructive approach, and sociocultural approaches, reconsider how mathematics lessons are perceived, and discuss ways to improve mathematics instruction.
Lesson12: Assessment in mathematics education and actual analysis
Students will learn about the purpose, significance, and function of assessment/evaluation, as well as practical methods. Through this, they start to consider how to apply this assessment knowledge to mathematics teaching in the future.
Lesson13: Assessment in mathematics education and actual analysis
We will analyze mathematics lesson from an assessment perspective based on practical data from mathematics.
Lesson14: Assessment in mathematics education Evaluation and improvement of mathematics Lessons
Through an analysis of practical data from mathematics, we will examine the basic ideas about constructinglessons that junior high and high school mathematics teachers should have, as well as the ability and attitude to grasp practice.
[Report 2] Create a mathematics unit plan and mathematics lesson plan for junior high or high school based on the learned theories on teaching and learning mathematics, and assessment theory.
Lesson15: Setting the research agenda for mathematics education
Students will review the theory and practice of mathematics education and set their own research agenda for mathematics education. I expect students to develop an attitude of conceiving research issues and themes and trying to solve them in order to improve mathematics learning and teaching.
