Class Objectives
/Class Outline
In recent years, a new genre has emerged in French literature and subsequently in German literature: the autosociobiography. In autobiographies, authors write about their past; in autoSOCIOgraphies, however, autobiographers analyze their own lives sociologically. These factual narratives often focus on social mobility, especially the upward mobility of individuals from poor and educationally disadvantaged families.
These narratives are interesting not only because they offer insight into everyday life in contemporary German families, but also because reading them helps us understand social mechanisms.
In this course, we will read excerpts from two autosociobiographies: Christian Baron, “Ein Mann seiner Klasse” (2020), and Deniz Ohde, “Streulicht” (2020).
