Class Objectives
/Class Outline
German is not just one single form of German. It is spoken in different varieties in several countries, and within those countries there are many dialects. The German spoken today differs from historical forms of the language. Children speak differently from retirees. We speak differently with friends than with a supervisor. Native speakers of German speak differently from those who have learned it as a foreign language. The language we use in writing differs from the language we use in speaking. A novel employs a different kind of language than a scholarly article. German, therefore, is not simply one uniform language. In this course, we will explore the various language varieties of German and also attempt to use them.
In each class session, some theoretical aspects of German language varieties will be introduced, and we will carry out speaking exercises that sometimes relate directly to the theory and sometimes only loosely.
