Class Objectives /Class Outline |
Railways emerged as a modern land transportation system in the early 19th century. By mounting steam engines—a product of the Industrial Revolution—onto rolling stock, they achieved significant reductions in both travel time and transportation costs. Railways, originating in Europe, rapidly spread worldwide, profoundly impacting economies and societies across the globe. Approximately 150 years have passed since railways first appeared in Southeast Asia, and their role has evolved over time. This course will trace the political, economic, and social transformations of the region, using the history of Southeast Asian railways as its foundation. |
