How has Japanese historical scholarship understood the politics and society of medieval Japan? We will examine the evolution of this understanding and shifts in its focus. This will enable us to grasp the key issues in medieval Japanese historical research while simultaneously reflecting on the meaning of “understanding and researching past societies.”
