Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The aim of the class is to strengthen students' ability to read about and understand traditional Chinese culture using basic documentary sources. 
Class Schedule Session 1: Introduction – Chinese Traditional Culture and Textual Civilization
Meaning of wen; the Sinosphere; texts as the core of civilization; course themes (transmission and canonization).
Session 2: The Chinese Script and the Rise of Textual Culture
Origins and structure of Chinese characters; growth of documentary culture; copying and transmission; shift from oral to written culture.
Session 3: Transmission of Texts and Cultural Continuity
Transmission of classics, histories, and philosophical works; loss and reconstruction; manuscript culture; textual authority.
Session 4: Dynasties and Texts
Reorganization of texts after dynastic change; book burnings and prohibitions; state compilation; control of knowledge.
Session 5: Canon Formation in Historical Context
Confucian classical studies in the Han; Tang–Song textual projects; Ming–Qing compilations; formation of orthodoxy.
Session 6: The Idea of the Canon
Fourfold classification (Classics, Histories, Masters, Collections); authority of the Classics; orthodoxy and heterodoxy; commentarial tradition.
Session 7: Canonization and Religious Traditions
Reception of Buddhist scriptures; formation of the Daoist canon; the Three Teachings; orthodoxy and pluralism.
Session 8: Conclusion – A Civilization of Texts
Transmission and canonization; text-centered society; legacy in the modern world.
