Class Status within Educational Program (Applicable only to targeted subjects for undergraduate students) | This course aims to equip students with the skills to gather and analyze information from various sources on academic disciplines. |
|---|
Criterion referenced Evaluation (Applicable only to targeted subjects for undergraduate students) | Integrated Global Studies (Knowledge and Understanding) ・The knowledge and understanding of the important characteristics and basic theoretical framework of individual academic disciplines. ・The knowledge and understanding to fully recognize the mutual relations and their importance among individual academic disciplines. (Abilities and Skills) ・The ability to specify necessary theories and methods for the consideration of important issues. (Comprehensive Abilities) ・The ability to conduct research proactively by combining knowledge, understanding, and skills for the tasks, based on flexible creativity and imagination. |
Class Objectives /Class Outline |
Students will learn basic knowledge and experimental techniques required to analyze and interpret natural environments through laboratory and field studies. This course is designed to help students develop scientific habits of mind, including understanding statistics (mean and standard deviation), accuracy and precision, and significant figures. |
| Class Schedule |
・Self-organized criticality (Tanaka:1-3): June 11, 12, 18 Lesson 1 Guidance and lecture: Introduction to self-organized critical phenomena Lesson 2 Laboratory work: Distribution in avalanche 1 Lesson 3 Laboratory work: Distribution in avalanche 2 ・Colloid and Interface Science (Villeneuve and Iwamoto : 4-9): June 19, 25, 26, July 2, 3, 9 Come to Souka H304 on June 19th. Colloidal and capillary interactions exist everywhere in the natural environment and human activity, including fog, aerosol, condensation, soil aggregate structures, sandbar formation, food, and industrial processes. Students will conduct experiments to understand colloids and interfaces. Lesson 4 Size distribution of aerosol [statistics, stability of colloids, Kelvin's equation] Lesson 5 Synthesis and coagulation of Fe(OH)3 colloid [stability of colloids, DLVO theory] Lesson 6 Chemical sunset [light scattering by colloidal particles, kinetics] Lesson 7, 8 Surface tension measurement of surfactant solution [solution chemistry, phase rule, thermodynamics of a capillary system, monolayer film and micelle] Lesson 9 Data analysis
・Principle methods in Biodiversity (Yamada, Komada: 10-15): July 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, You will learn field and analytical methods for quantitative evaluations of biodiversity in forest ecosystems. Also, you will learn how to evaluate the diversity of plants. Fieldwork will be done twice on Saturday and Sunday, so please keep July 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th for the fieldwork. Please come to C511 on 10th July.
Taking records and notes of the experiments is extremely important. Please bring a laboratory notebook. |
