Class Objectives
/Class Outline
This course develops advanced academic reading skills through close analysis of recent research abstracts in phonetics and phonology. Students will learn how to extract research questions, identify methodological design, evaluate findings, and assess theoretical contributions from concise academic texts. The course is designed to support independent research and thesis preparation.
Active engagement with academic English is expected. No highly specialized prior knowledge is required, but students should be prepared for analytical discussion.

Preparation and
Review
Before each class, make sure to read the assigned sections of research papers. After each class, summarize newly acquired knowledge in comment sheets, submit them by the deadline, and prepare for the quiz. For the final presentation, each student will introduce a research paper, incorporating analytical and critical perspectives. 
Requirements Students must have earned credit for at least one course in linguistics or a closely related field. English proficiency equivalent to approximately TOEIC 700 (or comparable level) is recommended, as this course requires sustained reading of academic abstracts and short analytical writing in English. 
Grading Method Quiz = 30%
Assignment submissions = 30%
Final presentation = 30%
Comment sheets = 10%  
Practical Experience  
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it  
Message While a deep understanding of phonetics and phonology is not required, proficiency in reading English texts is essential. Additionally, there may be opportunities for participation in speech experiments or surveys during class. Your active involvement in such activities is encouraged. 
Other Two or more unjustified absences will result in disqualification. Lateness of more than 30 minutes will be considered as an absence.
