Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Aiming to improve, develop, and promote the independence of current in-school training programs, this course will facilitate collaborative learning among participants and provide opportunities for practical application in schools through action research and other methods. Through joint research conducted by course participants, the goal is to develop learning materials for the professional development of in-service teachers. The specific content of the course will be refined based on the interests of the participants, which is why the course is titled "Developmental Research." Therefore, the specific content, as well as the schedule and dates of the course, will be determined in consultation with the participants.

However, the course cannot be conducted without any predetermined direction. Accordingly, the current plan for the 2025 academic year (Reiwa 7) is outlined here. In the 2025 academic year, the course will focus on implementing “Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR),” a school-based professional development method developed in Australia and widely implemented nationwide. A lecturer from the University of Newcastle in Australia, who speaks Japanese, will be invited for one month between May and July.

In this course, participants will experience QTR and collaborate on examining what effective in-school training looks like, integrating it with their action research to enhance its contribution in schools. The ultimate goal is to develop learning materials for in-service teachers, as much as possible, through this collaborative exploration.

Suggestions on
Preparation and
Review
As middle school leaders, please consider school development with a focus on utilizing in-school training as an opportunity. Graduate students in teacher education should not view their action research as merely an individual endeavor but rather as something embedded within the school context and implement it accordingly. QTR serves as one of the methodologies to support this approach.
Requirements Active participation is expected.
Grading Method Grading will be based on the following components:

Contribution to collaborative work (e.g., discussions, lesson preparation, lesson analysis) – 50%
Contribution to the development process of learning materials (or co-authored research papers) – 50%
Practical Experience Experienced
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it In the 2025 academic year (Reiwa 7), the course will be conducted with the cooperation of Professor Elena Rodriguez and Mr. Matthew McInnes (PhD candidate and high school chemistry teacher) from the University of Newcastle, Australia. The course will be conducted in Japanese, and interpretation will be provided in instances where English is used.
Message This course aims to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical experiences that help participants understand collaborative work among faculty and staff through joint research.

Here, "joint research" does not simply mean dividing tasks to create a single product. Instead, it involves refining and integrating diverse perspectives and opinions into a cohesive outcome.

Through this course, participants will be encouraged to seek out theories that are useful to them as lifelong learners in the teaching profession. Additionally, the course aims to develop foundational skills for adapting these theories to the specific contexts and conditions of individual schools.
