This course aims to understand the framework and various aspects of Indian Mahayana Buddhism while mastering the methods of interpreting Sanskrit original texts and their Tibetan translations. This academic year, the focus will be on Bodhicaryāvatāra (Chapters 3 and 4). Students will meticulously analyze the Sanskrit original texts and Tibetan translations, critically examine modern translations (in French, German, English, Japanese, and Chinese), and explore the most rational interpretation. Additionally, by referring to Prajñākaramati's commentary and various Tibetan commentaries (such as those by Thogs med bzang po, Bu ston, and Dar ma rin chen), students will investigate the historical development of the commentarial tradition surrounding the Bodhicaryāvatāra. |
