Class Objectives /Class Outline |
It has long been said that the 21st century is the era of mental health (WHO, 2014). However, a variety of mental health problems, such as crime victimization, natural disasters, bullying, social withdrawal, and child abuse, have become increasingly apparent. In recent years, it has also been pointed out that stress among graduate students is growing more severe, due to a combination of factors such as academic and research demands, uncertainty about future careers, and financial concerns. In order to address these ever-expanding and complex stress-related issues, it is crucial to understand specific methods for coping with stress and to acquire the necessary skills for effective stress management. In this lecture, we will discuss the effects of stress on physical and mental health, as well as on behavior, based on a fundamental understanding of stress theory. We will also deepen our understanding of the characteristics of stressful events, psychological responses such as anxiety and anger, physiological responses to stress, and both direct and indirect impacts on health. Furthermore, we will introduce the basic concepts and practical examples of stress management as a form of preventive education aimed at fostering mental well-being. Specifically, we will explore tools necessary for managing or reducing stress—such as mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy—and present practical applications that a wide range of individuals, including graduate students, can utilize in their daily lives and in academic or research settings. |
