The "Advanced Seminar" will be held to give students opportunities to practically utilize their comprehensive knowledge to create new value and solve problems in society, based on their learning in the "Introductory Seminar for First-Year Students". It is designed for students to cultivate problem-finding and problem-solving skills through the study and discussion of cutting-edge topics and hands-on learning in small classes that transcend school and grade boundaries, and to develop challenge, presentation, and leadership skills. 
Expected OutcomeIn combination with the "Introduction to University Education" and the "Introductory Seminar for First-Year Students", students are expected to:
1. Form an independent learning attitude
2. Improve their problem-finding and problem-solving skills
3. Improve their logical and critical thinking skills
4. Improve their reading comprehension, expression, presentation, and discussion skills
5. Improve their communication and leadership skills

The 49th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Society of Sleep Research will be held over two days, on Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the Kasumi Campus (Ryouun Building, Kasumi Gymnasium, and Koujinkai Hall). By participating in this conference as a student member, the goal is to experience what an academic conference is like, engage with cutting-edge research in sleep science, and deepen interest and curiosity in the field. 
Class Schedule lesson1: Pre-briefing session (Friday, June 27, 9th and 10th periods)
lesson2-7: Conference participation (Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, June 29)
lesson8: Report meeting (Saturday, July 5, Periods 5-7)

A report must be submitted.

   During the two-day conference, participants are free to attend various symposiums, oral presentations, and poster sessions. They will select two research presentations that particularly caught their interest and submit a report on them. Additionally, they will present their findings at a report meeting held one to two weeks after the conference.
   As a lecture designed to provide fundamental knowledge on sleep studies, the "Basic Seminar on Sleep Studies" (15 sessions in total, each lasting 45 minutes) will also be held at Kōjin Hall during the conference period. Participants are free to attend this seminar as well.

Read one book on sleep in advance to acquire basic knowledge about sleep science. 
Requirements ·The participant limit is 50 people.
·Conference participation certificates (free of charge) will be distributed at the pre-briefing session on the day before the conference (Friday, June 27, 9th and 10th periods), so participation is mandatory.
·The report meeting will be held online via Teams one week after the conference (Saturday, July 5, Periods 5-7). Participation is required.
·Information related to the class will be posted on Moodle as needed, so be sure to check it regularly. 
Grading Method The following are the conditions for earning credits:

(1) Participate in the pre-briefing session.
(2) Attend the two-day conference.
(3) Submit a report on two research presentations that caught your interest and present your findings at the report meeting. 
Practical Experience Experienced  
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it The instructors, Hayashi and Tamura, have experience working as psychological counselors. Additionally, more than half of the research presentations at the Japan Society of Sleep Research are related to the clinical aspects of sleep, such as the treatment and prevention of sleep disorders. 
Message Sleep science is an interdisciplinary research field that spans a wide range of disciplines, from natural sciences to social sciences and humanities, focusing on various aspects of sleep. This includes sleep mechanisms studied through sleep science, the prevention and treatment of sleep disorders in the fields of sleep medicine, dentistry, and pharmacology, and the social issues related to sleep in daily life through sleep sociology. The Japanese Society of Sleep Research holds an annual conference, where approximately 2,000 researchers and professionals from various fields with an interest in sleep gather. 
Other ·A participation certificate (for a fee) is required to attend the conference, but students who attend the pre-briefing session will be provided with a student participation certificate (free of charge).
·Even those without a student membership card can attend the conference on the day (for a fee).
·Participation in luncheon seminars, where lunch is provided, is not permitted.

Instructors will reflect on your feedback and utilize the information for improving their teaching.
