Biology
(Abilities and Skills)
・Based on basic knowledge which is already acquired, to obtain the following experimental skills in order to practice research: 1) Basic observation skills and skills to manage experiments. 2) Ability to record observed natural phenomena. 3) Ability to collect and assess data.
Class Objectives
/Class Outline
In this class, we will collect and analyze data regarding biodiversity from both field surveys and molecular biological analysis in the laboratory. In addition, by collecting and observing the larvae and juveniles of various marine animals and comparing them, we will take a developmental perspective and deepen our insight into diversity.
Class Schedule A combination of face-to-face training and online presentations will be held.
Face-to-face training:
The following content will be implemented in an intensive format for 3 nights and 4 days.
1. Lecture on ecological and morphological diversity of living things
2. Observing and collecting marine animals mainly in the intertidal zone
3. Collecting, observing and recording plankton
4. Identification of observed and collected marine animals
5. DNA extraction from environmental samples

Online presentation:
Each participant will present the results of the analyzes conducted during the training, and a general discussion will be held with the participants of the open marine courses

Suggestions on
Preparation and
Review
In preparation for outdoor activities, it is recommended to read general books and illustrated encyclopedias on marine animal diversity and phylogenetic classification.
Requirements The capacity for participants is approximately 20 people including the open marine course held on the same day. If there are many applicants, a lottery will be held and a decision on whether to take the course will be made in mid-July. To register for the course, please follow the notice posted in the biology office.

Participants are responsible for their own transportation costs to the marine bilogical laboratory in Mukaishima-cho, Onomichi City, where the face-to-face training will be held, as well as food expenses during their stay at the laboratory.

If you have any allergies other than food or drink to food or specific organisms, or any other peculiarities, please contact us in advance. Please note that due to the circumstances of the place where the meal is ordered, it is not possible to specify or change the ingredients.

The data, assignments, etc. collected, created, and submitted by participants in connection with the class may be used and published as teaching materials, etc. at the MBL (Hiroshima University) in the future. Please note that once you submit your request to take this class, you will be treated as agreeing to the above.
Grading Method A grading will be given by evaluating practical attitude, presentation, report, comprehensively.
