Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Japanese ethicist Tetsuro Watsuji (1889-1960) characterized ethics as the "study of human beings." Ethics does not simply explore values and norms for judging whether an action is good or bad, but explores all matters related to human beings. In fact, even in high school "ethics" texts, issues of art and science are dealt with as part of ethical issues in a broad sense.
In this class, we will consider "ethics as the study of human beings" based on several topics. We will select four questions: "What is virtue?", "How is peace possible?", "Humans and art", and "Humans and science." Through reading texts and materials, we aim to acquire the essence of ethical thinking and gain a perspective on the real world from ethical viewpoints.

A final exam will be held. After class, students will write a response paper.
