/Class Outline
This course provides an in-depth examination of specific aspects of East Asian history under the Mongol Empire. Subjects include a focus on translations, styles, and formats of edicts and diplomatic documents. The course also occasionally touches on spoken Chinese at that time.

lesson 2: The Mongol period and multilingual societies
lesson 3: Chinese textbooks and official documents during the Mongol period: Lao Qida, Piao Tongshi, and official documents translated from Mongolian
lesson 4: mini-exam, and The origin of the literal translation style of Chinese from Mongolian: A process of translating Güyüg's letter to the Pope from Mongolian into Latin
lesson 5: mini-exam, presentations, and discussion
lesson 6: The transformation of the literal translation style of Chinese from Mongolian: Edicts of Ögedei and Qubilai
