・Knowledge and understanding of "Japanese and Japanese culture"  and "foreign languages and foreign culture" which are prerequisite abilities for communication with peoples in different culture and areas. 
Class Objectives

This course aims to improve pronunciation using various phonetics knowledge and techniques. It includes shadowing, listening, recitation, recording, pair work, presentations, and phonetic observation.

Lesson 2:Spelling and Pronunciation, Phonemes
Lesson 3:Classification of Consonants (IPA, Japanese-English Comparison)
Lesson 4:Classification of Consonants (Voicing, Place of Articulation, Manner of Articulation, Plosives)
Lesson 5:Pronunciation of Consonants (Fricatives, Affricates, Nasals, Laterals, Glides)
Lesson 6:Classification of Vowels (IPA, Japanese-English Comparison, Cardinal Vowels)
Lesson 7:Classification of Vowels (Strong vs. Weak Vowels, Checked vs. Free Vowels, Long vs. Short Vowels)
Lesson 8:Classification of Vowels (Diphthongs, Weak Vowels, Semi-weak Vowels), Recording 2
Lesson 9:Connected Speech (Syllables, Consonant Clusters, Linking, Elision, Assimilation)
Lesson 10:Accent (Japanese-English Comparison, Word Accent, Compound Words, Phrases, Sentence Stress, Strong vs. Weak Forms)

Review
Each week, specific reading assignments will be given. Students should read with the goal of being able to explain the material to others. Additionally, pronunciation practice should be done daily using the knowledge and techniques learned in class. 
Requirements Please bring your laptop (tablets not allowed), headphones (with microphone is okay), mouse, and webcam (built-in webcam on your laptop is acceptable) to each session. There will be no written exams, but we will conduct quizzes on Moodle each session, and there will be several recording assignments.
Additionally, there may be opportunities for participation in speech experiments or surveys during class. Your active involvement in such activities is encouraged. 
Grading Method Grading will be based on assignments (50%), quizzes (40%), and in-class activities and comment sheets (10%). Regular attendance is essential, and missing more than 2 sessions will result in disqualification. Lateness of more than 30 minutes will be counted as an absence.

Message Why not take a fresh look at English language communication? Enhancing pronunciation improves self-expression, reduces misunderstandings in intercultural communication, and makes speech easier to comprehend. This reduces cognitive load for listeners, increasing their interest and retention. By systematically applying phonetics knowledge to pronunciation practice, you can improve more quickly and gain confidence.
