Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The aim of this course is to conduct X-ray spectroscopic study on dielectric/phosphor materials and alloys/metals using synchrotron radiation for master’s thesis. The students learn materials, experimental techniques, and physical properties related to the subject of their thesis. The students widely acquire the knowledges and skills of the relevant disciplines.
Class Schedule The students practice the advanced study in material science under the instruction of their supervisors. The results of the research work will be summarized as a Master’s thesis, and the outcomes will be presented at some academic meetings or scientific journals.

In this seminar, in order to elucidate the mechanism of physical properties, e.g. magnetism, dielectricity, elasticity, the following experimental researches using synchrotron radiation are introduced and discussed in the seminar:
X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES).
These approaches focus on understanding the change in crystal structure and electronic states, which is valuable for the element-selective and electronic-shell specific points of view.
Text/Reference
Books,etc.
The students read the references related to the research subject.
PC or AV used in
Class,etc.

(More Details) PC and LCD are used to show the slides of PowerPoint for oral presentation.
Learning techniques to be incorporated
Suggestions on
Preparation and
Review
The references should be read carefully, and the acquired knowledges and skills will be utilized for the research study. According to the progress of student's research, the staff gives advice and/or suggestion.
Requirements The students are encouraged to have careful investigations on their research subject and to discuss the results with their supervisors and colleagues. It is necessary for the student to grasp any problems on the subject and to consider a means to solve the problems.
Grading Method Preparation for presentation, Intelligibility, Activeness, Contents of presentation, Discussion (ca. 20% for each)
Practical Experience
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it
Message The students are recommended to be familiar to scientific papers in English and to acquire the information about synchrotron radiation and material sciences.
Other Submission of the research results to some refereed journal is highly encouraged.
Please fill in the class improvement questionnaire which is carried out on all classes.
Instructors will reflect on your feedback and utilize the information for improving their teaching.
