Class Objectives /Class Outline |
Class theme and target: First, students attend a lecture to acquire the basic knowledge and deepen the understanding of synchrotron radiation science for solid state physics. Subsequently, students receive practical training for the problems in synchrotron radiation science. Students attending this laboratory class acquire literacy of synchrotron radiation science, and are expected to be scientists who can look around the large scientific research field. This laboratory fills the role of a course work for students in master’s program who are going to be scientists with the ability to find out relationships between the material’s structure and the physical property and make good use of them in various fields. Students are required to learn the experimental and analytical techniques through the laboratory, and discuss the origin of physical properties using the obtained experimental results.
Class outline: In the class, students will do experiments using synchrotron radiation for four days (30 hours) using experimental apparatuses installed at each beamline in the Hiroshima Synchrotron Radiation Center (HiSOR) of Hiroshima University. Prior to the start of experiments, experimental theme will be determined based on students preference survey, experiments will be conducted at each beamline under the guidance of researchers in charge of each theme. Students are required to present an experimental reports after finishing the experiment. For those who are currently conducting research using synchrotron radiation, it is recommended to select an experimental theme that has never been done before. |
Class Schedule |
After having lecture about synchrotron radiation science, experiments will be done using the experimental apparatuses installed in the experiment hall or the experiment preparation room in Hiroshima Synchrotron Radiation Center (HiSOR). The laboratory class is given intensively for continuous 4 days (1 credit for 30 hrs).
# 1st day (start from afternoon): Prior to the experiment, students attend a lecture to learn basic principles of synchrotron radiation, operation of accelerator, solid state physics and experimental related to the laboratory. # 2nd day: Students chose a laboratory theme, and work on each theme while receiving the explanation of the experiment from a lecturer or a teaching assistant. For the theme needing experimental preparation time for a long time, the laboratory work starts after a lecture of the 1st day. # 3rd day: Continuing the laboratory work. # 4th day (end in morning): Completing a laboratory report with introduction including the study purpose, experimental, results and discussions.
Prospective laboratory themes # Photoemission spectroscopy(PES, @BL-5) Core-level photoemission spectroscopy, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction for state of Si surface before and after the cleaning. # Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES, @BL-7) Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy for valence band energy dispersion in a single crystal. # Accelerator beam diagnosis (ACC, @BL-8) Accelerator beam diagnosis for HiSOR’s beam profile and bunch length. # Vacuum-ultraviolet circular dichroism (VUVCD, @BL-12) Vacuum-ultraviolet circular dichroism spectroscopy for secondary structural analysis of proteins. # Absorption spectroscopy (XAS, @BL-13) Core-level absorption spectroscopy for orientation of self-assembled monolayer organic. # Magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD, @BL-14) Magnetic circular dichroism for electronic state of magnetic metal (e.g. Ni).
Students can choose one theme for laboratory in this class, but the theme may be changed by the situation of the experimental apparatus. The laboratory report must be submitted on the last day of the class according to the guidance of the lecturer. |

Requirements |
The laboratory class is intensively opened in the term when the HiSOR beamline is not opened for public researchers. In 2023 (R5), this class will be held from Tuesday afternoon, November 12th to Friday afternoon, November 15th, to prevent the spread of new coronavirus infections. However, it may be changed. Take great care of notice of opening of the class. Students must be allowed by HiSOR as radiation workers for the experiment participation beforehand. Students interested in experiments in HiSOR are welcome to attend this laboratory class. |
