In the course of educational development after the modernization of the country, Japan struggled with education issues similar to those in developing countries of today, and tried to solve them by analyzing its causes and introducing new policies and reforms. The course will give an overall view of the current education system and policies, and then review pre- and post-war policies from different levels of education, namely, teacher education, early childhood care and education, elementary and secondary education (science, mathematics, and social studies), higher education, and international education cooperation policies.
   Upon a successful completion of the course, the participants will be able to:
1) Explain the process and characteristics of Japanese experience of educational development; and
2) Draw lessons useful for solving education issues of developing nations from the Japanese experience, and discuss their policy implications.

Students are expected to have read the relevant chapters of the textbook before each session, and actively participate in discussions. Other reading materials will be announced in the 1st session.  
Requirements This is a compulsory subject for ALL students enrolled in the Master’s course of the International Education Development Program. Other students are also welcome. 
Grading Method Final-term paper (100%).
