Class Objectives /Class Outline |
As globalisation progresses, intercultural understanding becomes increasingly important as people from different cultural backgrounds interact with each other. In this course, students will read literary works set in three different regions at the end of the 19th century - Europe, Africa and East Asia - in order to acquire the skills to critically perceive various aspects of intercultural conflicts from the perspective of people living through the changes caused by modernisation and colonisation. Taking Fontane's "Effi Briest" in Germany and Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" in Nigeria as the main subjects, the course critically analyses cultural production from the perspectives of gender, ethnicity, race, class and nationality. In addition, literary works set in the same period in East Asia will also be the subject of comparison. |
Class Schedule |
1: guidance 2-5: lectures and exercises by Schlarb on 19th century German culture while reading Fontane's "Effi Briest" (1895). This is the most famous novel in German literature of the second half of the 19th century, depicting the structure of society at the time, which was in the process of modernisation, through the heroine, a provincial noblewoman whose marriage breaks up. The the novel shows how people try to live under constantly changing and contradictory values. In class, the Japanese version will be used as the basis for the discussion. 6: reading of an article in the field of cultural studies. 7-10: lectures and exercises by Oike on the structure of culture on the basis of the best-known work of African literature, Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" (1958). The novel is set in rural Nigeria at the end of the 19th century, which comes under British rule at the end of the story. The protagonist is a stubborn, mature, leading man who resists colonisation and dies. The colonial relations and gender structures that the story represents will be discussed. The class will base the story on the Japanese version. 11-12: Reading of short literary works from Japan, China and other Asian countries of roughly the same period. 13: overall summary, determination of the subjects of students' reports. 14-15: Report writing & presentations 16: Submission of report. |
