[Course outline]
Based on the philosophical differences from quantitative research and the historical development of qualitative research, built on a foundation of basic theory to deepen understanding of the methodology of qualitative research methods. Also, learn about qualitative research methodology and data analysis in practice.

[Goals]
1. To understand the philosophical foundations and historical development of qualitative research.
2. To understand the methodologies developed from representative basic philosophical theories.
3. To understand the selection of methodologies appropriate to the pursuit of research questions and issues.
4. To understand sampling methods and the validity of sampling methods in qualitative research.
5. To understand the data collection methods of representative methodologies.
6. To understand the similarities and differences in methods of analyzing collected data and ensuring validity and reliability in comparison to quantitative research. and to understand the similarities and differences between quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods.
7. To learn how to describe the results of qualitative data analysis.
8. To learn about triangulation and mixed methods.
9. To learn how to use the results of research. "

[Reports]
1. Mini-report on each lecture
Submit a summary of "What you learned in the lectures" on no more than one A4 sheet to Moodle by the beginning of the next week's class.
2. Review report
Select a qualitative research paper (English or Japanese: published in an academic journal) of your interest and review it using SRQR or COREQ.
(Submit the paper in an A4 report (about 2 pages): instructions will be provided in class).

Requirements - All classes, including outside instructors, will be held on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (as per the university's lecture schedule).
- Many of the outside lecturers will be online, but if you can come to the classroom, please come to the classroom.
- All outside instructors will provide lectures in Japanese. Therefore, for English-speaking students, Prof. Moriyama will summarize the lecture and provide lectures in English in separate time.
