Class Objectives /Class Outline |
This course focuses on the study of global issues and future challenges. All international graduate students who came to study at Hiroshima University through the PEACE and other student exchange programs are eligible to take this class. However, the number of students will be limited, if the total number of registration exceeds the maximum of 18 students. All students must conduct a research under the supervision of their own academic adviser at the faculty they belong. Then, in this class, they will learn how to write an academic paper and how to present the result of research at conferences, professional meetings, and press conferences. under the supervision of academic adviser. |
Class Schedule |
Lesson 1: (1) Introduction of this course, (2) each student’s brief explanation of one’s research theme (5 minutes presentation each, and (3) Exercise of writing an academic paper Lesson 2: (1) Lecture on how to write an academic paper and (2) a worksheet for self-preparation for an academic research paper. Lesson 3: (1) Introduction of each student brief explanation and (2) discussion on each topic of students' projects. Lesson 4: (1) Lecture on how to write an academic paper and (2) discussion on the issue of plagiarism Lesson 5: 1st Mid-term Presentation by 1st group (25 minutes each: 15 minutes presentation & 10 minutes Q & A and advising) Lesson6: 1st lecture on how to present a result of research at professional meetings and other occasions (18 lessons) Lesson 7: 1st Mid-term Presentation by 2nd group: (25 minutes each: 15 minutes presentation & 10 minutes Q & A and advising) Lesson 8: 2nd lecture on how to present a result of research at professional meetings and other occasions (What is an impressive speech?) Learning Outcomes:
1 Students should be able to describe the basic concept and background of one’s own topic of research to general audience.

Suggestions on Preparation and Review |
Workload: 3 credits =3 credits in UCTS=4.5ECTS = 135 hours of student workload [An estimated total amount of workload is 140 hours] 1. Class Hours: 4 academic hours x 8 times = 32 academic hours 2. Homework: [1] Create presentation material (2-3 pages long handout and10-15 power point slides) for each presentation. (15 hours [on average] x 3times= 45 hours) 3. Presentation: Students will present their own topic of independent study. Each presentation should be around 15 minutes long. (3 hour practice of one’s presentation x 3 times =9 hours) 4. Final Paper: There will be one final paper (Approximately 10 page paper [4000-5000 words & double spaced in A4 size papers] with appropriate references) for this class evaluation. (Time for a literature review and writing the paper, 50 hours) 5. Preparation: Student groups have to prepare for the “SDGs Student Seminar” (4hours) |
Requirements |
Instructional Language: Mainly in English Required English level: TOEFL-PBT/IT 500,TOEFL-iBT 61, TOEIC 590 Attendance policy: If you skip one class, you will lose 3% from your final grade (100%). In other words, if your miss more than 3 classes, your grade will drop one level. However, absences may be excused by an authorized letter or form from other professors, doctors, or any governmental officers. Class Size: 18 students* All international students who came to study in Hiroshima University through PEACE and maybe other programs are eligible to take this class, though the number of non-PEACE students will be limited, if the total number of registration exceeds the maximum of 18 students. |
