This course is positioned as a basic course for academic writing in English at university. Students learn how to write academic essays and research papers based on what they have learned in high school and academic writing skills. 
Expected OutcomeThe goal of this course is to enable students “to use the knowledge they have acquired in order to write an academic essay and research paper in English, to work on a writing of argumentative essays, and to improve their writing more effectively through learning with other students.” 
Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The aim of this course is to develop appropriate writing skills for academic essays and research papers in English according to the style of writing known as academic writing. In the first half of the course (Lessons 1 -5), the skills to write academic essays and research papers in English (the structure and style of academic writing in English) will be first introduced. In the second half of the course (Lessons 6-8), students are asked to write an argumentative essay as a practical activity to utilize the skills acquired in the first half of the course. In this activity, the students will first write an English composition and then work on improving it through peer feedback and, if necessary, feedback from the teacher.

The contents of the lecture and lesson style will be explained in detail. Brainstorming using a graphic organizer will be introduced as an approach to developing ideas before writing academic writing in English.

lesson6 Practical tasks (1): English composition
Students will write an argumentative essay based on the contents presented in Lessons 1-5.

lesson7 Practical tasks (2): Online peer feedback
Reviewers who provide feedback will give feedback to the assigned writers who receive feedback on an argumentative essay in the following order.
1) Question and answer session between a writer and a reviewer (Moodle)
2) Review using a provided checklist based on the contents introduced in Lesson 1-5/ Providing comments (Microsoft Word on Microsoft Teams)

lesson8 Working on the Practice Assignment (3): Revising (Final Assignment)
Based on the feedback received from reviewers and instructors, students will revise their argumentative essays and submit the revised essay. They will also work on a revision sheet to show how they responded to the provided feedback.

(More Details) The contents of each lesson (Table of Contents) will be uploaded to "Teams" or "Moodle". Students will have to use electronic media (PCs and tablets) in order to write English compositions in class.

Please reflect on your learning carefully considering your own writing on and in-class assignments. 
Requirements Please note the following points.

(1) Lesson style for Lesson 1:
Please make sure to attend a synchronous class (live-online class) in lesson 1 for an introduction to this course.

(2) Lesson style for Lessons 2-8:
Lessons 2-8 will be conducted mainly on demand. You will work on assignments based on lecture videos or handouts and submit in-class assignments. Unless there is any instruction to work in English, this course will be mainly implemented in Japanese.
Any questions and answers are welcome to be posted on Moodle.
In the end, you will work on and submit a final assignment, an argumentative essay in English.

(3) Peer feedback:
Please review others' writing fairly for the sake of learning opportunities for yourself and others, and work as hard as possible to improve others' writing.

(4) Reflection sheet:
At the end of each lesson, you will fill out and submit an online reflection sheet to reflect on your learning in class.

(5) Online vocabulary learning:
At the beginning of each class, a vocabulary test about academic writing in English will be given. This course will use the learning application "Quizlet" in order for you to learn vocabulary and take tests. Since a word study set containing vocabulary for each test will always be distributed on Quizlet at the beginning of each class, so please make sure to work on vocabulary learning to prepare for a vocabulary test.

(6) Since this lecture will partially include practical activities, please make sure that the course will take you lots of time and effort.
 
Grading Method Final assignment (50%), Final assignment(25%),Reflection sheet(25%)
The grade will be "Absent" if the number of submitted reflection sheets goes under 2/3 of the total number of times.

Message Please note that this class will target enhancing the basic knowledge of how to write academic essays and research papers in English at the university level. 
Other This course is provided for high school students. Students at the university are not eligible for this course.
