Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Regional and rural areas across Japan are often describe as being in decline, which has led to numerous efforts aimed at revitalizing rural communities. Revitalization efforts, however, require considering multiple aspects connected to sustainability (social, economic and environmental), and the interplay between individual and community needs and aspirations.
Students will conduct fieldwork in Higashi Hiroshima communities (transportation will be provided to and from the fieldwork sites).  Students will explore the concept of rural revitalization by seeking to discover the hidden value of these areas through the experiences of various people involved in rural revitalization activities at the individual and community level. They will then have the opportunity to consider how they might personally be able to contribute to the local economies/communities through their own enterprises and projects.
This course is offered through a partnership with the city of Higashi Hiroshima.

Lectures will be partly in English and partly in japanese. Groupwork and field work will be mainly in Japanese, but you will be able to interact with groupmates in English. The course aims to have a mix of Japanese and International students.
