Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The language used in this class is Japanese. This lecture aims to write scientific papers in English in the future and learn skills necessary for that. For students of science field. Learn about the composition and expression of English papers, using actual academic papers published in the top journal of chemistry as teaching materials.
Class Schedule lesson1:“Patterns of verbs and Life Science Dictionary Corpus ”  English sentences consists of SVOC. The basic five sentence styles shows how to assemble this SVOC, and at the same time, the five sentence styles shows how to use verbs. Since sentence patterns applicable for each verb are limited, it is necessary to learn how to use in sentences (sentence pattern) for each individual verb. If you use the Life Science Dictionary Corpus, you can find out how to use the verb in the research paper.
lesson2:”Structural analysis of English sentences”  If you can not analyze the structure of English sentences correctly, you can not write English sentences correctly. As elements of English sentences, in addition to the SVOC, there are phrases and clauses. Phrases consist of an adjective phrase, an adverb phrase, and a noun phrase. Clauses consists of an adjective clause, an adverbial clause, and a noun clause. You will learn typical patterns on how to combine phrases or clauses with SVOC.
lesson3:”Paragraph and ABT structure”  The elements of paragraphs are topic sentence, supporting sentences, and conclusion sentence. In scientific papers, it is desirable to construct paragraphs based on this principle. In addition, to construct a logical and easy to understand story, you should use the ABT (and, but, therefore) structure, which may improve your skill to build paragraphs for making easy-to-understand and logical stories.
Lesson4:”Structure of Scientific papers and Move Analysis: Move Construction of the Introduction”  The typical structure of scientific papers is IMRaD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion). In addition, Moves can show details of these important elements (IMRaD). Move constitution of Introduction is follows: 1. Presentation of research subjects and emphasis on its importance, 2. Presentation of new idea, 3. Introducing this research (Thesis statement). In addition, the typical expression obtained from Move corpus analysis is also summarized.
lesson5:”Move structure and symmetry structure of the Conclusion”  The Conclusion gives a summary of the whole, conclusions and future prospects. It is important to respond to the question raised in Introduction and Research Question. The idea of emphasizing such correspondence is also an expression of aesthetic sense to the symmetry structure of Western culture. Even in the paper, it is important to use the symmetry structure effectively.
lesson6:”The structure of the Results and its Move analysis”  The Move structure of Results consists of 1. Presentation of preconditions, 2. Indication of individual results, 3. Interpretation of results and presentation of summary. In order to explain each figure, we often use these three elements. Therefore, in the Results, we will use three Move repeatedly.
lesson7:”Structure of the Abstract”  There are two patterns in the composition of Abstract. One consists of a basic set of 1. Background, 2. Method, 3. Result, 4. Conclusion. The other consists of 1. Introduction of research subjects, 2. Problem raising, 3. Main contents of this research (1 sentence), 4. Detailed results, 5. Conclusions and perspectives. The main statement of this research is described in one sentence as “Thesis statement”, which is a key point in writing research papers in English. Therefore, the constitution of the Abstract preferred in the top journal is the latter pattern.
lesson8:”Principle of logical development”  The ABT structure is a structure to be considered in most parts of the paper. It is not necessarily to use “and”, “but”, and “therefore” their selves.
