Students learn thoughts and cultures of Hinduism and Buddhism in premodern India.

*Students who got admitted in 2018 or after can take this course as an “Area Course”. For this group of students, credits from this course will be regarded as credits from an “Area Course”.
If students who got admitted in 2017 or before take this course, it is regarded as a “Package-Based Subject”. The latter group of students cannot take this course as an “Area Course”.

In this course we learn religoius, moral, and law systems of Hinduism (Brahmanism, Vaisnavism, and Saivism) and Buddhism in India, mainly in the ancient age, and understand their roles in the making of the Sanskrit civilization in the Indian subcontinent. Iconic documents are actively used in this course. Although minimum, we also learn some modern forms of Hinduism and Buddhism.

Lesson 2 [Buddhism] Guidance: The Buddha and the history of Buddhism
Lesson 3 [Hinduism] Reincarnation and Liberation (1): Death and life views taught in the ancient Brahmanical scriptures
Lesson 4 [Hinduism] Reincarnation and Liberation (2): Death and life view found in modern Varanasi
Lesson 5 [Hinduism] Dharma: Rules of conduct and the ideal social structure according to the dharma scriptures, and interpreting the epic Ramayana
Lesson 6 [Hinduism] Artha ("profit") and Kama ("desire")
Lesson 7 [Hinduism] Soteriology of the Bhagavadgita and the myth of the god Krsna
Lesson 8 [Hinduism] Sakta (worship of goddesses and powers) and Tantra
Lesson 9 [Hinduism] Yoga and its world and human views
Lesson 10 [Buddhism] Buddha: Stories of former lives of the Buddha (Jataka stories).
Lesson 11 [Buddhism] Dhamma (Dharma): Religous discourses in early Buddhism.
Lesson 12 [Buddhism] Sangha: Rules of conduct and the ideal social structure taught in the vinaya scriptures.
Lesson 13 [Buddhism] Mahayana: Emptiness, compassion, and bodhisattvas.
Lesson 14 [Buddhism] Mahayana: The mind only philosophy and the Tathagata embryo.
Lesson 15 [Buddhism] Expansion of Buddhism and Ashoka's ideology

Students are required to submit a paper at the end of this course.

Lesson 1: Understand what the concepts "Hinduism" mean and the outline of Hinduism.
Lesson 2: Understand the outline of Buddhism.
Lessons 2-9: Understand religious, moral, and law systems in Hinduism.
Lessons 10-15: Understand religious, moral, and law systems in Buddhism.
 
Requirements You must be interested in Indian and Nepali cultures and religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. 
Grading Method Class performance 30% and the final paper 70%.
