The "Advanced Seminar" will be held to give students opportunities to practically utilize their comprehensive knowledge to create new value and solve problems in society, based on their learning in the "Introductory Seminar for First-Year Students". It is designed for students to cultivate problem-finding and problem-solving skills through the study and discussion of cutting-edge topics and hands-on learning in small classes that transcend school and grade boundaries, and to develop challenge, presentation, and leadership skills. 
Expected OutcomeIn combination with the "Introduction to University Education" and the "Introductory Seminar for First-Year Students", students are expected to:
1. Form an independent learning attitude
2. Improve their problem-finding and problem-solving skills
3. Improve their logical and critical thinking skills
4. Improve their reading comprehension, expression, presentation, and discussion skills
5. Improve their communication and leadership skills 
Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Students will learn about the practical aspects of field research and experiments using DNA, which are fundamental in the area of field science related to plants.  Specifically, the students will (1) participate in field navigation and conservation activities at the Higashihiroshima Campus and Miyajima in Hatsukaichi City, and participate in plant observation events held by the Miyajima Natural Botanical Garden.  In addition, students will (2) take specimens of collected plants and experience an introduction to molecular phylogenetic analysis by extracting DNA from the specimens. The results of (1) and (2) will be discussed. 
Class Schedule lesson1: Guidance, tour of the Higashi-hiroshima Botanical Garden, fundamentals of plant observation
lesson2: Maintenance of the trail on Mt. Gagara, field observation (scheduled for April and May)
lesson3: Plant specimen preparation
lesson4: Field trip for observation at Hiroshima City Botanical Garden
lesson5: Field trip for plant observation (Hikobia Botanical Field Tour, Miyajima Island of Hatsukaichi City etc.)
lesson6: Introduction to molecular phylogenetic analysis
lesson7: Invasive species problem, extermination, discussion
lesson8: Field observation of plants at Higashi-hiroshima Botanical Garden and Mt. Gagara (scheduled for October and November)
- A summary of the contents of each session should be submitted as a report.
- The schedule is currently under adjustment.
- The order of the sessions may change depending on the weather and other factors.
- The 5th lesson will be selected from the "Hikobia Botanical Field Tour" posted in the Digital Museum of Hiroshima University.
- For the contents of the 7th lesson, a written plan and panel should be prepared in advance.

Review
Read the handouts carefully. Please check the chat rooms of MS Teams and the Digital Museum of Hiroshima University, etc., for information as appropriate. 
Requirements (1) The maximum number of participants will be limited to about 8, taking into consideration safety when conducting outdoor activities.  If there are too many applicants, we will ask them to submit a motivation for taking the course (about 400 words) and make a selection.
(2) Attendance is required as a preliminary orientation will be held on the same day as the first class (expected in April. The specific date and time will be determined and notified after the students are confirmed).
(3) Students are required to take out "Accident Insurance for Student Education and Research" in case of unforeseen circumstances during class hours or while returning home. In addition to the above insurance, students are required to purchase "GAKKENSAI Ancillary Liability Insurance" or similar insurance in order to conduct activities outside the university. 
Grading Method Participation in all of the following is a prerequisite for grading.
(1) Participate in outdoor activities such as field training and observation sessions.
(2) Submit a report for each lesson.
(3) Participate in discussions based on the plan and the panel.
Evaluation will be on a pass/fail basis only, and will not be on a 5-step evaluation.

Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it In some contents, field surveys conducted in the field for environmental assessment, etc., and examples of social education, school education, etc., will be shown to learn about the methods and practice of such field surveys.

Other In principle, students are expected to attend classes after taking the Liberal Arts Seminar.
