Professor Emeritus Yoshihisa Kawahara of Hiroshima University will conduct the lecture in FY2023. The lecture format will be explained in the first session on April 12 (Wed.). This lecture is planned to be conducted face-to-face using PowerPoint files of lecture materials.

This lecture aims to understand the hydrological cycle on earth and the effects of anthropogenic influences and climate change. It also discusses the past and the present state of water resources management.  
Class Schedule lesson1 Introduction: Hydrologic cycle, water resources on the earth, water utilization
lesson2 Energy and water cycles: Solar radiation and heat/water balance the land surface
lesson3 Precipitation (1): Water in the atmosphere, precipitation mechanisms
lesson4 Precipitation (2): Precipitation measurements, global variation of precipitation
lesson5 Evapotranspiration: Evapotranspiration mechanisms, Measurement and estimation methods of evapotranspiration
lesson6 Surface and river flow: Precipitation distribution on the land surface, Rainfall-runoff processes, river discharge
lesson7 Subsurface water: Soil moisture and Groundwater
lesson8 Hydrologic modeling: Land surface model, river model, rainfall-runoff model
lesson9 Climate change and water-related disasters: Global Climate Models, floods, droughts, sediment-related disasters

Requirements Basic knowledge of hydraulics is preferred. 
Grading Method This course is evaluated from reports (60 %) and comprehension tests (40%).
