Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The objective of this class is to understand the basic microbiology; this is to understand diversity in microbial types, functions, through learning phylogeny, and microbial metabolism. Also, group work facilitates to gain deeper and wider knowledge on microbiology and its related issues such as medicine, environmental science and engineering, and biotechnology.
Class Schedule Lesson1  Guidance, Introduction of microbiology, History of microbiology, introduction of final presentation and group work
Lesson 2  Microbial cell structure and function, introduction of final presentation and choosing topic for the team
Lesson 3  Evolutions of life focusing on microbes
Lesson 4  Ribosomal RNA, Phylogeny and Classification
lesson 5  Microbial diversity 1: Proteobacteria
lesson6  Microbial diversity 2: Gram positive bacteria and others, Submission of inter-mid progress report and discussion (one-on-one)
lesson7  Microbial diversity 3: Archaea
lesson8  Metabolism 1: Photosynthesis
lesson9  Metabolism 2: Chemoautotrophic bacteria
lesson10  Metabolism 2: Anoxic respiration and elemental cycle
lesson11  Final exam
lesson12 Summary of the lecture and exam and introduction of cutting-edge research topics
lesson13  Final presentation
lesson14  Final presentation
lesson15  Final presentation

Term-end will be implemented. Group work on searching the topics on microbiology, requires, 1) final presentation, 2) inter-mid progress report, and 2) report for planning. In addition, quiz or report will be assigned.

Students will evaluate other students’ presentation and their work each other at the final presentation. After lesson 15, lesson 16 will be held "introduction of cutting edge research topic in the field of microbiology".
