Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Machines in our society are made of small mechanical parts. Mechanical parts such as screws, keys, springs, shafts, bearings, and power transmissions are included in virtually all mechanical machines. It is important for mechanical engineers to understand their role, structure, performance and design. Full understanding requires the knowledge in material mechanics, elastic mechanics, material science, heat treatment, machining, kinematics, tribology (lubrication) and mechanical dynamics.  This lecture first teaches the fundamental in mechanical elements design, such as the stress, the stress concentration, and tolerances. Then, fundamental mechanical elements, such as screws, keys, springs, shafts, bearings, and power transmissions are lectured.
Class Schedule Class 1 Outline.
Class 2 Basics (materials, stress and strain).
Class 3 Basics (stress and strength).
Class 4 Basics (stress concentration and fatigue).
Class 5 Basics (tolerance and fitness). Report #1 to be handed out (tentative).
Class 6 Basics (surface roughness), Screw #1 (types of screw)
Class 7 Screw #2 (efficiency and strength)
Class 8 Screw #3 (design of screw, threaded fasteners)
Class 9 Rivets, pins, press fit and weld joint.
Class 10 Springs #1 (design of compression coil spring)
Class 11 Springs #2 (various springs). Report #2 to be handed out (tentative).
Class 12 Shafts #1 (shafting elements, strength design of shaft)
Class 13 Shafts #2 (torsion of shaft and shaft coupling).
Class 14 Bearings.
Class 15 Power-rotation transmitting elements (belts and chains).

A quiz is given at the end of every class for checking class attendance.
A term-end exam. 3 reports (tentative).
