Class Objectives
/Class Outline
In this class, students will learn on gear design that is important one in machine elements. Furthermore, students will acquire the point of view and knowledge on friction, wear and lubrication,
or Tribology, which relate closely to performance, durability and reliability of gear and machine elements.
Specifically, its goals are to:
1) Acquire an ability to understand and provide an explanation to fundamental matter of gear design.
2) Acquire abilities to understand the point of view for gear strength design, and to be able to design it.
3) Acquire abilities to understand and provide an explanation on the many factors effecting on Tribology, and to be able to apply it to mechanical design.
Class Schedule lesson1: Outline of the lecture. Basics of power transmission, Explanations on sort and classification of gears: spur gears, helical gears, etc.
lesson2: Requirement of gear tooth profile, and gear standards.
lesson3: Explanations of gear meshing condition and generating gear cutting. Standard gears (Non-profile shifted gears).
lesson4: Contact ratio of spur gear and undercut of gear.
lesson5: Profile shifted gears.
lesson6: Helical gears.
lesson7: Gear strength design.
lesson8: Bevel gear and worm gear.
lesson9: Gear train and planetary gear drive.
lesson10: Fundamental of tribology, term definition, lubrication method and configuration.
lesson11: Surface and contact and friction. Boundary lubrication and mixed lubrication. Rolling friction.
lesson12: Types and roles of lubricants.
lesson13: Surface damage and wear.
lesson14: Hydrodynamic lubrication and elastohydrodynamic lubrication.
lesson15: Application of tribology to mechanical engineering.

A quiz (short report) will be given every class.
A term-end examination will be conducted.
Reports will be required about 4 times.
