Pharmacology is 'the study of the relationship between drugs and living organisms' and is closely related to biology, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, pathobiochemistry, pathophysiology and pharmacotherapeutics. Pharmacology lectures have two major roles: to educate students to acquire the basic knowledge necessary for correct pharmacotherapy in clinical practice after graduation from dental school, and to establish the basis for pharmacotherapy for diseases for which no treatment exists yet. Dental Pharmacology I is particularly divided into pharmacokinetics, which examines how drugs move and change in the body, or the life of a drug, and pharmacodynamics, which elucidates how drugs themselves work in the body, or how they work, or how they affect the body. The course is a foundation for learning the correct knowledge of medicines.

Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The learning of pharmacology, the science that deals with the action and use of drugs, is an important step to become a dentist. Modern therapeutics requires understanding of the underlying mechanism of pharmacological action.
Pharmacology is uniquely positioned among the biomedical sciences. Namely, studying pharmacology depends on understanding genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, organ physiology, anatomy, and clinical dentistry. Thereby, pharmacology starts at a critical juncture in the dental curriculum, after completion of most of the basic science courses but before clinical training have begun.
Class Schedule Lesson 1 & 2: Fundamental Principles of Pharmacology (Receptor/Drug Action/Dose‒Response Relationships)
Lesson 3 & 4: Fundamental Principles of Pharmacology (Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacogenomics/Drug-Drug Interactions/Toxicity)
Lesson 5 & 6: Peripheral Nervous System (Overview/Cholinergic Pharmacology/Drugs Acting on the Motor System)
Lesson 7 & 8: Peripheral Nervous System (Adrenergic Pharmacology)
Lesson 9 & 10: Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs & SAIDs)
Lesson 11 & 12: Analgesics & Opioids
Lesson 13 & 14: Local Anesthetic Pharmacology
