Biology
(Abilities and Skills)
・Based on basic knowledge which is already acquired, to obtain the following experimental skills in order to practice research: 1) Basic observation skills and skills to manage experiments. 2) Ability to record observed natural phenomena. 3) Ability to collect and assess data.
Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Choose from three different courses (Biomonitoring Course; Evolutionary Development/Omics Analysis Course; Evolutionary Development/Genome Editing Course) according to your purpose. In the biomonitoring course, students learn about biodiversity and taxonomic systems by collecting and analyzing data from both observation and collection of organisms in the field and molecular biological analysis in the laboratory. In the Evolutionary Development and Omics Analysis Course, students learn about the diversity and commonalities of animal development through observations and experiments, mainly focusing on the development of marine deuterostomes. In the Evolutionary Development and Genome Editing Course, students conduct genome editing experiments using marine invertebrates and learn the principles and applications of genome editing from the viewpoint of evolutionary development. All courses deal with basic experiments and/or analysis associated with next-generation sequencing.
Class Schedule Marine Biological Course for Biomonitoring
The following contents will be implemented in an intensive course of 4 days and 3 nights.
1. Lecture for ecological and morphological diversity of marine animals
2. Collecting intertidal organism at sandbar and rocky shore and observation and sketch
3. Plankton sampling by plankton net and observation and sketch under microscope
4. Morphological identification of collected organisms
5. DNA extraction of environmental samples

Marine Biological Course for Evolutionary Development and Omics Analysis
The following contents will be implemented in an intensive course of 5 days and 4 nights.
1. Lecture for fertilization, development, evolution  (partially in English)
2. Observation of deuterostome development such as sea urchins, ascidians, acorn worms, amphioxus, and anatomy of deuterostome.
3. Next generation sequence analysis of gene expression and/or its regulation during development.

Marine Biological Course for Evolutionary Development and Genome Editing
The following contents will be implemented in an intensive course of 5 days and 4 nights.
1. Lecture for fertilization, development, evolution  (partially in English)
2. Observation and dissection of organisms used in experiments (sea urchins, sea squirts, etc.)
3. Gene function analysis experiments such as genome editing

Online presentation:
Each participant presents the results such as analysis and others conducted in the course. There is an integrated discussion with participants from other courses.

Preparation and
Review
All students are expected to prepare for the course with the text provided by the marine lab.
Requirements Application form has to be submitted to the Support Office for the fields of Science (undergraduate course), Hiroshima University by the closing date.
You can take multiple courses, however, you can obtain the credit only for one course.
The students with any kind of allergy and/or idiosyncrasy must inform us in advance.
You will be responsible for the cost of your transportation and food.
The data, assignments, and all that collected, created, and submitted by the students in relation to the class may be used and published as teaching materials for the Hiroshima University in the future. Please note that when you submit your request to take this class, we will treat it as your agreement to the above.
Grading Method A grading will be given by evaluating practical attitude, presentation and report, comprehensively.
