In this course, students will acquire the tools necessary to understand the basic operation of Criminal Justice and Correctional Institutions from an international perspective. The course explores the main institutions and the participants involved in the development and operation of criminal justice systems, such as police enforcement, criminal courts, and prisons. In each class, the examination of Crime, the Victim, and the Offender from a variety of perspectives (Academics,
Media, Arts, and Politics) offers students the opportunity to creatively think about the criminal justice institutions.

2nd class: The modern study of Criminal Justice
3rd class: Criminal Justice portrayed in media
4th class: Criminal Justice Institutions
5th class: Overview of modern Criminal Justice Institutions (Police,
     Prosecution, Courts, Legal Defense, and Prison)
6th class: Criminal Justice Institutions portrayed in media.
7th class: Function of Criminal Justice Institutions
8th class: How do Criminal Justice Institutions work?
9th class: Justice portrayed in media.
10th class: Prison
11th class: The Birth of Prison
12th class: Prison Treatment
13th class: Prison in Media
14th class: Life after prison
15th class: How is life after prison portrayed in media?

After each lecture, students will address problems brought up during presentations. In addition, students will have to write a final report based on one of the topics to be discussed in the 1st class.

Class materials will be uploaded on demand. The class material will be explained in English, but students are encouraged to look for similar material in Japanese. 
Requirements Reports must be written in English or written in Japanese with a referenced English translation (to be explained in class).

Message Students interested in Criminal Justice from an international perspective and willing to practice their English are encouraged to join. During each class, the lecturer will use video, music, movies, news, and art to discuss Criminal Justice from a creative perspective.
