Class Objectives

In this course, students will acquire the tools necessary to understand the basic operation of Criminal Justice and Correctional Institutions from an international perspective. The course explores the main institutions and the participants involved in the development and operation of criminal justice systems, such as police enforcement, criminal courts, and prisons. In each class, the examination of Crime, the Victim, and the Offender from a variety of perspectives (Academics, Media, Arts, and Politics) offers students the opportunity to creatively think about the criminal justice institutions. 
Class Schedule First Day: Day 1: Introduction to Criminal Justice Studies.

-     The modern study of Criminal Justice.

-     Criminal Justice through history.

-     Criminal Justice portrayed in media.

Second Day: Day 2: Criminal Justice Institutions.

- Overview of modern Criminal Justice Institutions (Police, - Prosecution, Courts, Legal Defense, and Prison)

- Function of Criminal Justice Institutions (Overview).

- Criminal Justice Institutions portrayed in media.

Third Day: Day 3: Function of Criminal Justice Institutions.

- How do Criminal Justice Institutions work?

- General notions on Justice through history.

Fourth Day: Day 4: Historical origins of prison.

- Prison “treatment”.


Fifth Day: Life after prison.

- What is life after prison?


After each lecture, the lecturer will organize graded interactive activities to address problems brought up during each presentation. In addition, there will be personal opinion reports to be submitted after class

The lecturer will upload class materials and links before the class. Students are encouraged to bring laptops or tablets to search for supporting material during class.

 
Requirements Students must participate in class discussions and interactive activities. Personal opinion reports must be written in English or written in Japanese with a referenced English translation (to be explained in class).

Practical Experience  
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it  
Message Students interested in Criminal Justice from an international perspective and willing to practice their English are encouraged to join. During the class, the lecturer will use video, music, movies, news, and art to discuss Criminal Justice from a creative perspective. 
Other Interactive activities are meant to encourage discussion and improve communication skills. Students can mention topics and supporting information they wish to discuss during the lecture.
