Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Based on the lecturer's experience as a practitioner of Japanese diplomacy for more than 44 years, he will discuss the development of international relations/international politics theory as "theory" from the side of "practice. Specifically, he will begin by discussing the philosophy and practice of British and U.S. diplomacy based on his experience working in the United Kingdom (mainland and former colonies) and the United States. Then, from the perspective of Japan in the world, he will discuss the breakdown and continuation of post-war Japan, and Japanese diplomacy after the occupation and the enactment of the new constitution, which restored Japan's independence, from the angles of "particular" and "universal. Finally, based on the lecturer's experience in multilateral diplomacy (United Nations, OECD, European Union), he will discuss the movement toward the formation of a "trans-sovereign state type" (trans-national) global order that cannot be captured by sovereign state-centered "geopolitics" (realist international politics), and Japan's position in this movement.
