Class Objectives
/Class Outline
At universities, as the specialized courses progress, the contact points between social science fields such as law, political science, economics, and sociology and the humanities, including philosophy and ethics, tend to become weaker. However, at the stage of high school “Civics,” “Ethics” is combined with “Politics and Economy” as seen in the subject “Public.” It is hoped then that students will be able to find more reliable clues to problem solving by constantly confronting various problems in the social sciences while studying ethics. I would like to understand here that the “reflective equilibrium” (J. Rawls) between “understanding of facts” and “ethical theories” assumed here is the focus of applied ethics (this point will be explained in detail in the introduction).
From this point of view, in this class, we will select the topics of political ethics, economic ethics, legal ethics, science and technology ethics, environmental ethics, bioethics, and ethics of religion and peace from various fields of applied ethics. We aim to acquire the ability to research and develop teaching materials in social studies education and ethics education (moral education).
