Class Objectives

Students will deepen understanding of basic theories and today’s issues of research on mathematics education through reading books of researches on mathematics education published in Japan and overseas, discussions, and investigations, and cultivate exploring skills and practical skills to subjectively research on their own research theme and to put the research results to practice.

 Students will be provided with an overview of the seminar."

This lesson will explain an overview of major research areas of mathematics education to raise students’ awareness of issues regarding research on mathematics education.

"Lesson3: Research Outcomes of Mathematics Education (1)
Through reading and discussions of literatures about mathematics education, students are expected to learn the outcomes of researches on cognitive theories and recognition theories in mathematics education.

"Lesson4: Research Outcomes of Mathematics Education (2)
Through reading and discussions of literatures about mathematics education, students are expected to learn the outcomes of researches on content theories of arithmetic and mathematics in mathematics education.

"Lesson5: Research Methodology of Mathematics Education (1)
Through reading and discussions of literatures about mathematics education, students are expected to learn methods of theoretical researches in mathematics education.

Review an overview of the seminar and identify objectives.  Find and get books for reference.
After Lesson2-6:
Read the books for reference. Sort out the content of the books. Clarify your questions about the books.
【Report Assignment1】
Think about your research based on the books for reference, in consideration of research outcomes and research methods.
After Lesson7
Examine the evaluation of your report assignment and the outcome of a group discussion to identify your research theme and methods.
After Lesson8-13:
Put knowledge and skills concerning principles, methods, and contents of mathematics education together. Find books and documents about your research theme. Carry out your research in a systematic manner. Prepare yourself to be able to present the process and outcome of your research.
【Report Assignment2】
Sort out points of your research. Write a final report about your research
After Lesson14-15:
Examine the evaluation of your report assignment and the outcome of a group discussion to clarify your challenge and think about what you should do to conduct a research of mathematics education in a proactive manner.

Requirements  
Grading Method Students will be evaluated based on report assignments:40%, reports on research assignments:40%, and attendance:20%. Students’ ‘ intellectual capabilities and Skills 1’ and ‘ Comprehensive capabilities & Skills 1’ will be evaluated based on report assignments, presentations, and discussions.
