Class Objectives
/Class Outline
In this course, students will analyze and study the principles and methods of mathematics education from the viewpoint of integration of theories and practices, through which they will deepen understanding of the principles and methods of mathematics education and learn to utilize them for improving teachers’ practices. Also, the students will learn to see mathematics recognition from a standpoint of learners and to effectively conduct mathematics education with enhanced lesson observation and practice skills.  
Class Schedule Lesson1: Course Overview and Objectives
  Students will be provided with an overview of this course to clarify the objective.
Lesson2: Aims and Objectives of Mathematics Education
  Students understand the aims and objectives of secondary school mathematics education in Japan.
Lesson3: Significance of Mathematical Activities in Mathematics Education
  Students understand the meaning of mathematical activities and think about the significance of students' mathematical activities in the process of learning mathematics.
Lesson4: Teaching and Learning of Mathematics
  Students think about the teaching and learning of secondary school mathematics with examples of mathematics topic.
[Report Task 1] Report your ideas for the aims and objectives of secondary school mathematics education in Japan.
Lesson5: Secondary School Students' Attainmenets in the PISA Survey
  Students understand Japanese students' attainments by the result of the Survey.
Lesson 6: Secondary School Students' Attainmenets in the Japan National Survey (Problem A; "Number and Algebraic Expression" and "Geometry")
  Students understand Japanese students' attainments by analyzing the result of the Survey.
Lesson7: Secondary School Students' Attainmenets in the Japan National Survey (Problem A; "Function" and "Data Handling")
  Students understand Japanese students' attainments by analyzing the result of the Survey.
Lesson8: Secondary School Students' Attainmenets in the Japan National Survey (Problem B; "Mathematical Context")
  Students understand Japanese students' attainments by analyzing the result of the Survey.

Lesson10: Mutual Evaluation of the Proposals
  Students share their strategies and discuss them and reflect on the ideas for improving their strategies.  
Lesson11: Reason and Methods for Secondary School Mathematics
  Students understand the reason and methods in practicing mathematics lessons.
Lesson12: Making Evaluation Plan for Secondary School Mathematics
  Students make their evaluation plan for practicing mathematics lessons by using the evaluation standrds.
Lesson13: Planning Lesson for Lower Secondary School Mathematics
  Students make their lesson plans for lower secondary school mathematics.
Lesson14: Planning Lesson for Upper Secondary School Mathematics
  Students make their lesson plans for upper secondary school mathematics.
Lesson15: Discussion and Improvement of Lesson Plans
  Students discuss their lesson plans and improve each lesson plan.
[Report Task 3] Report your improved lesson plan.

Lesson plans, lesson observation records, and commitment to trial lessons are important. 
Requirements This course is for the students of Cluster 2 (Program in Mathematic Education) and Others who wish to become a mathematics teacher. 
Grading Method Students will be evaluated based on report assignments (20%) and final examination (80%).
Students’ Knowledge & Understanding will be evaluated mainly based on final examination.
Students’ Intellectual Capabilities & Skills will be evaluated mainly based on report assignments and work to be submitted.
