Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The purpose of this course is for students to learn the fundamental and basic knowledge and understanding of curriculum design for science education, and to cultivate knowledge, understanding, and skills needed for designing curriculum and creating a teaching plan for science education.
 
Class Schedule Lesson1: Course Overview and Viewpoint, and Report Assignment1
Students will be provided with an overview of this course to clarify the objectives of this course and raise students’ awareness of the issues.
Lesson2: Principles of Curriculum Design (1)
This lesson will explain the meaning of a curriculum as a educational process and a learning experience to provide a viewpoint for Report Assignment1.
Lesson3: Principles of Curriculum Design (2)
This lesson will analyze the basic principles of school subject structure, using the concepts of scope and sequence of curriculum construction methods( curriculum construction methods, school subject structure).
Lesson4: Social Foundation of Curriculum (1)
This lesson will introduce a case study about social control of curricula in the U.K. to clarify the relations between ‘ science’ and ‘ curriculum’.

Lesson5: Social Foundation of Curriculum (2)
Students will discuss and examine school knowledge and daily knowledge including school culture and potential curricula, with examples of science.
Lesson6: Educational Purposes and Objectives and Science Curriculum (1)
This lesson will explain the relations between educational purposes and a curriculum, taxonomy of educational objectives and other principles that are important in designing a curriculum.
"Lesson7: Educational Purposes and Objectives and Science Curriculum (2), Report Assignment (2)
This lesson will try classification of curricula into patterns according to educational objectives and explain how science curricula are developed in accordance with educational objectives.

Lesson8: History of the Course of Study in Science Education (1)
This lesson will explain the history of the curriculum guidelines of elementary and secondary science from after WWII to today, and analyze the characteristics of the revision based on the social background.
Lesson9: History of the Course of Study in Science Education (2)
Same as the above.
Lesson10: History of the Course of Study in Science Education (3)
This lesson will explain the transition of the curriculum guidelines of high school science from after WWII to today, and analyze the characteristics of the revision based on the social background.
Lesson11: History of the Course of Study in Science Education (4)
Same as the above.
Lesson12: Science Curricula in Other Countries (Part 1)
This lesson will analyze the science curriculum developed in the era of curriculum development started from 1950s in the U.K. and the National Curriculum today to extract its structure, characteristics, and principles.
Lesson13: Science Curricula in Other Countries (Part 2)
This lesson will analyze the science curriculum developed in the era of curriculum development started from 1950s in the U.S. and the National Science Education Standards today to extract its structure, characteristics, and principles.
Lesosn14: Science Curricula of Other Countries (Part 3)
This lesson will analyze the school curriculum and science curriculum of Finland, which has been scored No.1 in international surveys on academic performance, to extract its structure, characteristics, and principles.
Lesson15: Evaluation of and Comment on Report Assignment 1, 2, & 3 and Course Summary


Report Assignment 1】
Students will be required to research school curricula on the internet or in any other ways to investigate curriculum structure.
【Report Assignment 2】
Students will be provided with some key concepts and required to summarize the thoughts on ‘ curriculum.
【Report Assignment 3】
Students will be required to use knowledge and understanding acquired and skills cultivated through the previous lessons and to design an ideal secondary science curriculum.

Understand an overview of the entire course and check the assignment. Search for introduced reference books and read some of them to be prepared for the next lesson.

Review the contents of each lesson and read reference books to deepen understanding.

Summarize the lessons so far. If there is anything unclear, you should look up in the reference books or ask questions before writing a report.

Review the contents of each lesson and read reference books to deepen understanding.

Summarize the lessons so far. If there is anything unclear, you should look up in the reference books or ask questions before writing a report. Particularly, this report will be a summary of this course, preparation before writing the report (reading materials, asking questions, discussing with other students) will be extremely important.

Study the evaluation of your returned reports and identify your challenges,

Requirements Teaching methods of school subjects ( science)
 
Grading Method Students will be evaluated based on attendance (30%), Report Assignment  (70%). Students’ ‘ Intellectual capabilities and skills 2’ and ‘ Practical capabilities & skills 1’ will be evaluated based on the report assignments.

 
Practical Experience  
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it  
Message This course will explain the principles of curriculum design and lesson plans with analyzing examples of Japan and overseas. At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to understand why lesson plans are needed and how to develop a lesson plan.
