・To deepen understanding of basic knowledge about schools for secondary education and secondary education itself. Also, to be able to explain this knowledge.

・Based on understanding of collected (historical) materials and information on science education in secondary education, to be able to examine and analyze them. 
Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The purpose of this course is for students to learn mainly general and comprehends matters concerning science education and nurture the fundamental knowledge of science education and ways of thinking, based on the Introduction to Science Education which is a specialized basic education course of the program. Particularly, the Introduction to Study in Science Education I focuses on theoretical aspects.
 
Class Schedule Lesson 1: Course Outline. Science Education and Teacher Education
The instructor will give an overview of this course so that students can clearly see the aim and the contents of this course. The instructor will explaine sceince teacher education system in Japan.

Lesson 2: Theories of Purposes and Objectives of Science Education (1)
The instructor will explain what science, an academic background of science education, and a new view of science.

Lesson 3: Theories of Purposes and Objectives of Science Education (2)
The instructor will explain what scientific literacy is as a theory of purposes and why science literacy needs to be developed in science education.

Lesson 4: The Course of Study and Science Education
This lecture will be focused on the outline of the Course of Study and how to manage science curriculum in secondary schools.

Lesson 5: Short summary (1) and short test (1)

Lesson 6: Understanding the actual condition of students
The instructor will explain the meaning and viewpoints of understanding the actual condition of students.

Lesson 7: How to understand the actual condition of students in terms of learning contents
The instructor will give an overview of ways to understand the actual conditions of students based on what they learned and experience.

Lesson 8: How to understand the actual conditions of children in terms of problem solving qualities and skills
The instructor will give an overview of ways to understand students’ actual condition using some tools.

Lesson 9: Classroom Situation
The instructor will give an overview of ways to understand the actual condition of students based on classroom situation.

Lesson 10: Short summary (2) and short test (2)

Lesson 11: Contents Structure of Junior High School Science
We will discuss principles of contents structure in junior high school sciences using the Curriculum Guidelines.

Lesson 12: Contents Structure of High School Science
We will discuss principles of contents structure in high school sciences using the Curriculum Guidelines.

Lesson 13: Experiments and Observations in Secondary Science
We will discuss the meaning of experiments and observations in secondary science.

Lesson 14: Teaching materials in Secondary Science
We will discuss the teaching materials for effective learning in secondary science.

Lesson 15: Short summary (3) and short test (3)


Three times short tests will be held at Leesson 5, 10 nad 15.

Review
Lesson1-5: Find and read articles in newspapers and magazines about international academic surveys. Read the Commentary to the Curriculum Guidelines for Junior High Schools and High Schools, Science to and other to see the purposes and objectives of science education. Read the textbook well.
Lesson6-10: Read books about natural cognition and organize your thoughts.
Lesson11-15: Read textbook and the Commentary to the Curriculum Guidelines for Junior High Schools and High Schools, and consider contents of secondary science education, teaching materials. 
Requirements This course targets students who entered the university in the academic year 2012.
(If you entered the university in or before the academic year 2011, take Introduction of Science Education I(elective) ).
This is a special subject for teacher education ( science, teaching methods of school subject).
 
Grading Method Students will be evaluated comprehensively based on attendance(10%) and tests and report assignments (90%).
