To learn basic knowledge necessary for creative educational activities in the period of the integrated study, incorporating cross-sectional and integrated learning and learning based on children’s interest and others, and to acquire qualities needed for developing the integrated studies.

1.The course outline will be explained as an orientation of this course. The objectives of this course will be identified to raise students’ awareness of the issues and the viewpoint of this course will be presented.

2.‘ Fortitude to live’ will be re-considered as an issue of education today.

3.Students will deepen understanding of the intent of establishing the Period for the Integrated Study and its learning activities, and examine the meaning of the Period for the Integrated Study by looking at the ambiguity off the term “ integrated”, the aim and the effect of this study, and the reasons why the integrated study is needed.

4.Students will examine deeply the position of the Period for the Integrated Study in the education curriculum and how the evaluation of this study should be.

5.Students will deepen understanding of the objectives and points to keep in mind in developing a curriculum of the Period for the Integrated Study from the viewpoint of school’s subjective curriculum management.

6.Student will examine the essence of teachers support and how teachers’ leadership should be and think about the expectations toward teachers’ leadership in the Period for the Integrated Study.

7.A fill-in-the-blank test about the Period for the Integrated Study in the curriculum guidelines for elementary schools will be given to check students’ understanding of the basics required for an elementary teacher.

【Report Assignment】A report on what you want to do in the Period for in the integrated learning as a teacher. (Students are required to submit this report after Lesson15 because students will deepen their understanding about how the Period for the Integrated Study should be through Leson8 to 15.

8.Students will examine the basic learning process and the role of teachers by looking at practical examples at elementary schools with the themes of ‘ rice farming, environment, and food’

9.Students will study several approaches of theme-settings and examine the relations to other subject and fields by looking at an example of Ina City Ina Elementary School.

10.The students will identify the meaning of the cooperation and the issues in implementing the Period for the Integrated Study by looking at an example that utilizes the history of a local region and local industry.

11.Students will study the situation overseas and the possibilities of implementing the Period for the Integrated Study at an international partnership school by looking at an example of the integrated study implemented at junior high school under the theme of international understanding. In this lesson, the contents of Lesson 8 through 11 will be reviewed. Students will write a short essay as Assignment Report 2.

12.Students will examine what need to be considered before implementing the Period for the Integrated Study by looking at the process of unit constitution.

13.Students will study how to analyze materials and how to design a curriculum in reference to books written for foreign teachers. Simple exercises will be done to deepen understanding.

14.A specific theme will be set based on the contents of Lesson2. A draft of a course unit for the Period for the Integrated Study will be created based on literature research and on-site surveys. Students will prepare materials and others for presentations in Lesson15.

15.Students will present a draft of their course unit for the Period for the Integrated Study, and review how the course unit constitution from Lesson12 onward should be and write a short essay about it as Report Assignment 3.

Preparation and
Review
Lesson1: A brief explanation of report assignments and Midterm exam will be given to show a broad view of this course and be prepared for the lessons. A question sheet will be utilized at each lesson for organizing concerned assignments and reviewing important points.
Lesson2 -3:  Review the lessons and identify your challenge. A question sheet will be used if you have any question and comment of the lessons. Copies of submitted question sheet will be distributed and the questions will be answered in the following lesson for opinion exchange.
Lesson7: Midterm exam will consist of 100 fill-in-the-blank questions from Chapter 5: Period for the Integrated Study of the curriculum guideline for elementary education. Students should check key words from every lesson and be prepared for the exam early.
Lesson8-15: Review the result of a Midterm exam before the latter half of the lessons will start. Check key words from a lesson and review a lesson and identify your challenge after each lesson. Use a question sheet for your questions and comments of lessons.  
Requirements Special Subject for Teacher Education.  Required course for students of Cluster 1, Program in Elementary School Teacher Education. 
Grading Method Students will be evaluated based on tests and reports(Reports can be assigned by each of the two lecturers).
The test will be fill-in-the-blank test about the Period for the Integrated Study in the Curriculum Guidelines for elementary school education(The passing point is 80 points).
